Experiencing art with all senses
  • Stockmar products create a positive impression due to the underlying educational and artistic ideas which inform their creation. Based on the principles of Waldorf School education, our paints, crayons and modelling materials are deliberately designed to appeal to the child's senses. In our technological world, 'virtual reality' often replaces genuine experience. Stockmar products are aimed at providing genuine artistic experience which develop and enhance the senses.¬†
  • Basic experiences like feeling, grasping and shaping act on the child's brain and have a positive effect on the sensory motor development. In today's world such a stimulus is more important than ever before. Only when children are able to register the effect of the external world on their senses can they take their stand in the world with confidence. There is a circular movement from experience of self to experience of the wider environment.

Raw Material and Quality Monitoring
  • Stockmar products are known for their quality all over the world. For us it is a major challenge to live up to these high expectations - from the procurement of the raw materials right through to the delivery of the finished product.¬†
  • Guided by this conception of quality, we have developed sophisticated production methods over many decades. Our employees do not just have to demonstrate their craftsmanship in processes properly associated with handcraft production, they also have to be fully experienced in operating complex modern technology. After the internal quality control by the employee that forms part of the production process, a final meticulous scrutiny will always be carried out at the time when the products are carefully packaged and dispatched.¬†
  • Product development and control of the raw materials are very important to the quality of Stockmar's products. This marks a combination of decades of experience with the very latest scientific findings. The finer points of the composition of our products of course remain a secret. But one thing we can promise our customers - Stockmar products have no negative effects on health or on the environment. We expect the suppliers of our raw materials to provide detailed documentation showing the origin and composition of the materials supplied, and we lay the same stringent requirements on ourselves by having every product batch investigated by an independent laboratory. You are welcome to call Dr Mehmet Cetinkaya of the Labor f√ľr R√ľckstandsanalytik [Laboratory for Residue Analysis] in Bremen to confirm our guarantee regarding our quality control.¬†

  • In order for the senses to be holistically addressed and stimulated, the materials need to be of a quality that is not just statistically measurable, but is also subjectively perceptible from an experiential, 'feeling' level. The packaging, colour, scent, shape, properties, ease of handling and artistic possibilities all contribute to a total aesthetic, sense-imbued experience.
  • It is this enhanced, holistic quality that Stockmar products aspire towards.
  • Based in Schleswig-Holstein, the Stockmar company has been making quality products for art and art teaching for many decades. Hans Stockmar started with beekeeping products and beeswax candles in 1922. Acting on the suggestion of certain art teachers he soon proceeded to develop his modelling wax, and more than 50 years ago the classic Stockmar wax crayon was then created. The watercolours and wax sheets came later.
  • The Stockmar logo combines the hexagonal form of a beehive with Goethe's colour circle. Beeswax and colour: at Stockmar that is what it all comes down to. Stockmar really equates to beeswax, so closely is the firm associated with the bee product. Of course it is the main raw material used to make our candles, but it is also an important component in the wax-based paints and modelling beeswax. Beeswax is in fact crucially important to the paints. Both in the wax-based paints and in the modelling beeswax it is responsible for the characteristic transparent, glazed effect.
  • As well as aesthetic principles and art teaching considerations, ecological and social aspects are also central to the development and manufacture of our products. Regular painting workshops for the employees involving a college art teacher, and profit-sharing by the staff (we are not a capital owned company) are things that are taken for granted in Stockmar's philosophy. Last but not least we are fully aware of the responsibility placed on us by our customers' confidence in the quality of our products.
